# 427 - October 8th, 2014
Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably
then I shall begin… I have been a little remiss by not always including the
various A.V. Foodshed events in the column so here are some for the month of
October… This Friday, October 10, Fri Oct 10 - Paysanne Ice Cream in Boonville
offers a free small coffee with any local crepe; the Buckhorn, Boonville
features some local food dinners on the menu; and there is an AV Community Farm
Benefit at 18500 Lambert Lane from 5pm-midnight… Lauren’s Restaurant and
Mosswood Market have a number of local food specials throughout the month and
the A.V. Framer’s Market continues on Saturday mornings in the Boonville Hotel
parking lot from 10am-12.30pm, although they will move across the street to the
Boonville General Store from November 1 for the winter months… That’ll do
for now…
And now for
the rest of the Public Service Announcements (P.S.A.’s)… Calendars and pens at
the ready… #559 - Bill Harper, the President/Supreme Leader of our local Lions’
Club branch, writes to inform me and readers that “The Anderson Valley Lions
Club with be conducting free eye screenings at the Adult School located
to the left of the Elementary School on the following dates and times: Monday,
Oct 13 at 7:30 to 11:30 am, 1 to 4 pm, and 7:30 to 8:30 pm; and also Wednesday,
Oct 15th from 7:30 to 11:00 am and 5:30 to 8:30 pm. If you want to make an
appointment call Community Health Corps members Matthew Tunzi (831-809-6462) or
Brooke Angel (619-846-0167). The children at the Elementary School will be
screened separately so adults/parents and high school students are encouraged
to take advantage of this opportunity while they can”… #560 - The Vets from the
Mendocino Animal Hospital will be visiting the Valley on two occasions this
month, the first of which is tomorrow - Thursday, October 9. As always, the
venue is the A.V. Farm Supply but their hours have been extended - they will
now be there from 2-4pm and new customers are always welcome. Their next visit
is in two week’s time on Thursday, October 23… #561 - The
Anderson Valley Grange is having its regular second Sunday Local Organic
Pancake and Egg Breakfast on October 12, 8:30-11 at The Grange. Breakfast
ranges from $5-10 with Mendocino Grain Project wheat and local bacon and eggs.
Gluten free is also available… #562 - This
year’s final Guest Chef Dinner, the series of community dinners to
benefit the Senior Center takes place on Saturday, October 25 and will be in
the form of an Oktoberfest celebration to be held in the unique and appropriately
decorated Barn at the AV Farm Supply, just north of Philo. Prepared by Fal
Allen and Friends, there will be a Happy Hour at 5pm and Dinner will be served
at 6pm. Tickets are $30.00, which includes the dinner, one complementary drink,
and a donation to the Senior Center of $10. Only a limited number of tickets
will be sold, and anyone who attended last year will surely be back, so get
yours early for this very popular event… #563 - I believe there may be a
drumming circle night at The Grange this evening - Wednesday, October 8 from
7pm-9pm. Contact Rob 895-3897 or Andy 895-3020 for further details…
And
as a special service, here are some standout events over the next few months… The annual Halloween Dark
Carnival presentation at The Shed behind the Farrer Building; a Veterans Day
Observation service on Sunday, November 9 at the Evergreen Cemetery; hopefully
November play-offs for all three of the school’s fall sport’s teams –
volleyball, soccer, and football; Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 27; Christmas
Day is once again on December 25 - a Thursday; and of course the annual New
Year’s Eve party at Lauren’s Restaurant in Boonville…
As a bonus P.S.A. here is the
menu for the Community Lunches and Dinners over the next week at the Senior Center
in the Veterans Hall in Boonville… The Center asks for a $6 donation from
seniors for both lunches and dinners and charges $7 for Non-seniors for lunches
and $8 for the dinners… Tomorrow, Thursday, October 9, the lunch, served by
Marti Titus and her crew at 12.15pm, will be Oven Fried Fish & Potatoes,
Cabbage Apple Slaw, Butternut Squash, Freekah Salad, Tater Sauce, and Monkey
Tail Cake for dessert… Then, next Tuesday evening, September 9 at 6pm, the
dinner will feature Chicken Gloria, Brown Rice, Cauliflower, Cherry Gelatin,
Broccoli Salad, and Banana Pudding for dessert. As this is the 2nd Tuesday of
the month, the dinner will be followed by Bingo at 7pm. Hopefully you will be
able to attend, and remember – ALL ages are welcome! Hope to see you
there…
Moving
quickly on to a few of the topics and Valley events under discussion this week
at The Three-Dot Lounge – yes it’s “Moans, Groans, Good Thoughts, and Rampant
(and surprisingly reliable) Rumors” from my favorite gathering place in the
Valley, a location that sees people get together and share their thoughts about
life in A.V.…
… A
couple of regulars inform me that this coming Sunday (October 12) will be a
special locals’ night at Coq au Vin Restaurant at the Floodgate. They will be
closed on their usual locals’ night of Monday (Oct 13) for this week only,
although there has been some talk of Sunday becoming the regular night for such
evenings…
… Talking of special evenings, I was honored to be one
of the guests at the ‘exclusive’ celebration of Carolyn Eigenman’s 80th
Birthday held at the Buckhorn last Saturday evening. A wonderful time was held
by one and all with Carolyn’s family there in force along with many local
friends. It was an open bar, with a secret code of ‘1934’ - Carolyn’s birth
year, to get complimentary drinks all evening from barman Dan. The delicious
prime rib dinner was prepared by Jared Titus and the crew, and served by
hard-working waitress Amy who must have been up and down the stairs nearly
fifty times!... A good job by one and all, and a special thank you to Carolyn
for ‘doing it right’ - by inviting friends and providing them with fine food
and drink. A class act that is not always the case anymore…
… And on a final note with regards to good times… I have
had more of those at one particular place than at any other - The Mad Dog in
the Fog pub in San Francisco on Haight Street at Fillmore - a place that will
be 25 years old this coming Saturday… Thanks for the memories…
Well
now I think it’s time to take my leave, as I do have to see a man about a
sheep… So, until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay
out of the ditches; think good thoughts; be wary of strangers with more dogs
than teeth; please remember to keep your windows cracked if you have pets in
your vehicle; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final
request, “Let us prey”… Sometimes poking, often stroking, but always humbly
yours, Turkey Vulture - hope you enjoyed the read and who knows, you might miss
me when you’re gone (?)…
p.s. You can contact me with words of support/abuse
either through the Letters Page or by e-mail at <turkeyvulture1@earthlink.net>
p.p.s. Keep on wagging that tail, Fred… Is that ‘lafter’
I hear, Carroll?... Keep up the good work, Round-eyed Robin…
