# 339 - December 26th, 2012

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… So how was your Christmas? Did the new sweater fit? Did it still fit after dinner? Did you keep the receipt for your nephew’s broken toy? Why was Uncle Stan so drunk and was that the reason Grandpa was rude to him? Why did Cousin Betty go for a nap and not return? Who was that long-haired slacker that teenage niece Tiffany was talking to on the doorstep? Why was Aunt Jenny crying? Did you ever find the new puppy that went missing?... And to make matters even more worrisome and confusing, next up it’s the Amateur’s Night Out of the Year – New Year’s Eve! Try to enjoy yourselves and if someone is behaving badly then I suggest you just smile and walk away – you know it makes sense.

Speaking of parties and drinking, please be careful. Get your designated driver organized and stay away from the ‘Train Wrecks’ (Tequila and Whisky) – that’s just a silly idea! Which segues perfectly into the first Quote of the Week, this one from Miguel De Cervantes, author of ‘Don Quixote’ and Spain’s greatest literary figure - “Drink moderately, for drunkenness neither keeps a secret, nor observes a promise”...Wise words of advice but not easy to follow for many of us!

Anyway, with the dawn of a New Year fast approaching, and with new resolutions bursting forth, for a bonus Quote of the Week let me offer you these wise words by Gore Vidal to think about as a possible resolution for 2013 – “Never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television” – difficult to argue with, I’d say...

And here’s a story for your hangover reading pleasure and perhaps to give you a pick-me-up knowing that there are always people ‘suffering’ more than you are. It comes from my #1 fan,  “Perturbed of Philo, California” who writes, ”Dear Turkey Vulture, Happy Holidays to you, Hummingbird, and all the gang up at The Nest. Let me share with you a very brief yet moving Christmas anecdote about one specific memory that my family always shares over the holidays. My great Uncle Ernest was born in 1908, and he had all his own teeth until the day he died. This isn't as impressive as it might at first seem, however - he died aged sixteen when he choked on a turkey bone on Christmas Day 1924”…

Public Service Announcements… Calendars and pens at the ready… #521: Useful numbers at this time of year - for road conditions and closures call 1-800-gas-road (427-7623) and for power problems and outages call 1-800-PGE (743)-5000. I just thought you should know…       #522 – As mentioned here last week, the Vets from Mendocino Animal Hospital have cancelled their planned visit to the Valley for tomorrow, Dec 27. They will be here on two Thursdays next month -  January 10 and 24… #523 – The Senior Center remains closed for the holidays for another week; re-opening on Thursday, Jan 3rd... #524 – Are there any ‘proper’ New Year’s Eve parties open to the public this year? I think I should have been told!... Sure, there is Bert’s lovely annual event, and various private or semi-private events, some of which I will attend as an invitee or simply gatecrash with a bottle of Roederer L’Ermitage Rosé, but I am unaware of any that the masses can just turn up at. Perhaps I hanging out with the wrong people?… #525 – As mentioned last week, the Valley’s two Crab Feeds are coming up!! Yes, folks, a couple of the most popular events of the year are just around the corner and both will certainly sell out. The first, to benefit the Senior Center, is as always on the 3rd Saturday - January 19, followed just two weeks later, a week earlier than usual, on Saturday, Feb 2, by the event to benefit the Catholic Church organized by the irrepressible Gloria Ross. A ticket for either (or both!) would be a great Christmas gift so for the first feed call 895-3609, and the second it’s 895-3071...

The Three-Dot Lounge is closed for the holidays but that did not deter a few regulars from coming up to The Nest to take part in a debate of vital importance… As many regular readers will be aware, every year I give out awards for various ‘important’ aspects of culinary life here in the Valley - Best Fries, Best Classic Spicy Wings, Best Strawberries, Best Meat Lovers Deli Sandwich, and Best Burger... This year the decision on the latter item on this list was the most difficult to date and so I opened up the debate to various 3-Dot regulars. In the end I just had to go with a three-way tie between Libby’s succulent masterpiece; the perfectly prepared delight at Lauren’s Restaurant; and the one which may well have changed my whole ‘burger philosophy’ – the stupendous Buffalo Burger at The Buckhorn – let the cows live; eat the buffalo!... If the year ahead looks uncertain, at least here in the Valley we can put our concerns aside and always enjoy a great burger – and yer gotta like that!...

From our 3-Dot regular, The Old Buzzard, who incidentally does not eat burgers from the local restaurants, preferring sheep’s eyes, squirrel livers, and deer testicles, comes another in his insightful series – ‘The Approach of the Apocalypse’… Buzzard reports, “Not for the first time around here, and not for the last I’m sure, the conversation at The 3-Dot turned to the ‘luminaries’ who live here in the Valley. After skipping quite quickly through names of current residents such as the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker (‘The Color Purple’), accomplished actor Rene Auberjonois, and Nobel Laureate Cary Mullis, inevitably the less celebrated but perhaps equally famous, or rather infamous, names of those who at one point lived here were discussed in greater depth. Many readers not from this area may not be aware of this but perhaps they should be told that the list includes convicted killer Charles Manson (of the Manson Family), formerly of Gschwend Road in the Christine Woods region; Jim Jones of People’s Temple fame and a member of the A.V.H.S. faculty in the late sixties; convicted sex offender and kidnapper Kenneth Parnell, resident of Mountain View Road in the early seventies; serial killer Leonard Lake, commune-dweller in Philo in the early eighties (just before embarking on his diabolical murder spree with Charles Ng in Calaveras County); and ‘Tree Frog’ Johnson, formerly of Boonville in the seventies, another infamous child abductor/abuser who befriended a number of Valley folks during his time here… I mention this because it is a topic that quite often surfaces in discussions around here but it is clearly a topic that should not be made light of it. Obviously these days the Valley is an exceptionally friendly, generally harmonious, and frequently community-minded place to live. However, these former ‘Valley People’, the perpetrators of some of the most heinous crimes imaginable, all once lived here and that fact is a small but unique part of the Valley’s history, albeit in a way that some choose to ignore. I’m sure this information does not appear in the Chamber of Commerce’s literature although I imagine if it did, and ‘Tours of Evil People’s Homes’ became a tourist attraction around here, then that really would indicate the imminent ‘Approach of the Apocalypse’… I’m just sayin’…”

Inappropriate banter for the New Year? Oh, dear, have I upset somebody? – I’ll guess I should get my coat and leave… So until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; may your god go with you…And all the very best in health and happiness for 2013…Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Humbly yours, Turkey Vulture…

# 338 - December 19th, 2012

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… Hopefully you’re enjoying the spirit of the Holidays and may Hummingbird and I wish you and yours the very best of health and happiness at this time of year and for 2013.

That’s enough sloppy sentimentality for any Turkey Vulture to express, so let’s move swiftly on…. How about a festive Quiz? Here are ten seasonal posers that will help you keep your brain afloat despite all the eggnog it will be drowning in… Answers at the end of the column...
1. What headgear did boys receive for Christmas in the mid-fifties?
2. What ‘Saturday Evening Post’ artist was known for his whimsical pictures of Santa Claus?
3. In the song ‘Grandma got run over by a Reindeer’ what did Grandma go to get?
4. What was the angel’s name in the classic Christmas movie, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’?
5. Who starred as George and Mary Bailey in that same great movie? And who played one of my all-time favorite movie characters, the curmudgeonly Mr. Potter?
6. What is the famous Christmas story written by O. Henry?
7. How many of Santa’s Reindeer can you name – there are eight, or even nine...
8. Who wrote the song “White Christmas”?
9. In the film ‘White Christmas’, which actress ends up with Bing Crosby’s character?
10. Who was the President on Christmas Day 1952 – sixty years ago?

And for an appropriate Quote of the Week, let me refer you to this observation by one of the greatest of all Americans - Benjamin Franklin, who said, “How many observe Christ’s birthday! How few, his precepts! Oh! ‘Tis easier to keep holidays than commandments.” Yes, Ben, it would appear that it certainly is, but, as you uttered those words back in the late 1700’s, it would seem things were the same back then as they are today. That’s surprising. After all, in matters of piety and social behavior, I always assume things were so much more ‘civilized’ back then. I don’t feel so bad knowing that maybe they weren’t...

Public Service Announcements… Calendars and pens at the ready… #813 – The Vets from Mendocino Animal Hospital have cancelled their planned visit to the Valley on Dec 27 but they will be making two trips to the Valley on Thursdays in January – both the 10th and 24th… #814 – As mentioned last week, the Valley’s two Crab Feeds are coming up!! Yes, folks, a couple of the most popular events of the year are just around the corner and both will certainly sell out. The first, to benefit the Senior Center, is on Saturday, Jan 19 followed just two weeks later, on Saturday, Feb 2, by the event to benefit the Catholic Church organized by the irrepressible Gloria Ross. A ticket for either (or both!) would be a great Christmas gift so for the first feed call 895-3609, and the second it’s 895-3071... #815 - The Senior Center has closed for the holidays until the New Year when they will re-open for lunch on Thursday, January 3, 2013...
Moving quickly on to a few of the topics and Valley events under discussion this week at The Three-Dot Lounge – yes it’s “Moans, Groans, Good Thoughts, and Rampant Rumors” from my favorite gathering place in the Valley where people gather and share their thoughts about Valley life…
… A few regulars commented over the past few weeks that there seems to be a significant number of the holistic healing advocates who voice their opinions on KZYX & Z chat shows that seem to be suffering from some sort of illness and have to explain their raspy voice or sniffling nose when they are on the air? My advice? Take some DayQuil/NyQuil medication made by a giant pharmaceutical company; serve up a few less veggies on your plate and get some extra red meat inside you instead; imbibe a couple of glasses of wine or a few sips of warm brandy; have a roaring fire on the go; and curl up with a good book – I can almost guarantee that you’ll soon feel much better…
… School is now out for the holidays, although for many students and their families their annual trip to Mexico began a week or so earlier. A strange situation, I must say, and one which seems to have no solution…
… Several regulars at The 3-Dot have been wondering about who came up with the awful idea to go with the ‘prison-look’ for the new CalFire buildings just south of Boonville on Hwy 128. And those three lines of barbed wire at the top of the fence are straight out of prisoner-of-war camp Stalag 17. What an eyesore…
… As usual there are some very impressive Christmas light spectacles around the Valley but my current favorite is the understated but tasteful display at the A.V. Farm Supply – quantity isn’t always quality and these guys seem to have it just right, helped by the fact that they are the only ones around that part of Hwy 128, a mile or so north of Philo…

Well now I think it’s time to take my leave… “Happy Holidays to One and All” and until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Humbly yours, Turkey Vulture…

Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and in later years Rudolph, Donner’s son, was added.       8. The classic song was written by Irving Berlin.   9. Rosemary Clooney. 10. # 337 - December 12th, 2012

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… Isn’t it around about now that the ‘Thirteen Days of Christmas’ begin? And how come we almost never hear the 13th day sang about? You know, the one that goes ‘On the thirteenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me – thirteen Turkey Vultures preying’ – arguably the best line of all... Certainly more poignant that any lines about swans swimming, geese laying, colly birds, French hens, Turtle doves, and a silly partridge in a pear tree. But that’s just my opinion…

Another opinion, but one hopefully shared by many, is to echo the sentiments of the Anderson Valley Chamber of Commerce when I ask all you Valley-folk to shop, eat, and drink locally this holiday season. Support your local businesses; they need your business if they are to survive both the slowest time of the year and the current woeful economic climate. I am of the opinion that these businesses are beneficial to the Valley and we need them to be successful or we run the risk of losing them completely. Then we’d be faced with dealing with that loss - just like my Mother predicts that I will feel when she says, “you’ll miss me when I’m gone”...
Public Service Announcements… Calendars and pens at the ready… #813 – The Vets from Mendocino Animal Hospital will return to the Farm Supply in the Valley tomorrow, Thursday, Dec 13 from 2-3:30pm. If you are a previous client you can call them 48 hours in advance (462-8833) to ensure that your pet’s charts are brought ‘over the hill’ and also order any medications your pet might need. New customers and their pets are always welcome. They will be back in the Valley for their final visit of 2012 in two weeks time on Thursday, Dec 27… #814 - You are invited to join the AV Chamber of Commerce for a Holiday Soiree at the Downtown Boonville stores - Paysanne, All That Good Stuff, Farmhouse Mercantile, & Laughing Dog Books. It’s tomorrow, Thursday, December 13 from 5:30 pm until 7. Bring a treat or beverage to share. Celebrate the holidays! Support local shops!... #815 – The Crab Feeds are coming up!! Yes, folks, two of the most popular events of the year are just around the corner and both will sell out. The first, to benefit the Senior Center, is on Saturday, Jan 19 followed just two weeks later, on Saturday, Feb 2, by the event to benefit the Catholic Church organized by the irrepressible Gloria Ross. A ticket for either, or both!, would be a great Christmas gift – for the first call 895-3609, the second 895-3071...
As a bonus P.S.A. here is the menu for the two lunches over the next week at the Senior Center… The Center asks for a $5 donation from Seniors and charges $7 for Non-Seniors. Tomorrow, Thursday, December 13 the lunch, always served at 12.15pm by chef Marti Titus and her crew, will be Smothered Steak, corn, Garlic Red potatoes, Rolls, Apple – Spinach salad, and Texas Sheet Cake for dessert and then next Tuesday, December 18 the crew will be serving a very festive Roasted Turkey, Cornbread Dressing, Green beans, Gravy, Rolls, Cranberry- Raspberry Gelatin, Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake… That will be the final feast of the year before the Center closes for the holidays, re-opening on Thursday, January 3, 2013 for lunch…
Moving quickly on to a few of the topics and Valley events under discussion this week at The Three-Dot Lounge – yes it’s “Moans, Groans, Good Thoughts, and Rampant Rumors” from my favorite gathering place in the Valley where people gather and share their thoughts about Valley life…
… The Community Dinner held last weekend at The Grange is another one of the Valley’s most popular events and why not? Everyone coming together to share in a ‘community feast’ and a celebration of the good things in life – including all of the many wonderful local agricultural products that we as a community harvest every year… Well almost all of them… Quite a number of Valley folks were a little peeved that this was deemed a no-alcohol event despite wine being a huge part of this community’s agricultural endeavors. For reasons that are far from clear it was not available/allowed. I have no idea why but, speaking for more than just a few locals, there was disappointment that such a decision was made when a glass or two of local wine would certainly pair wonderfully well with many of the delicious foods that were served. ‘We’re not kids or idiots,’ seemed to be the general consensus among these folks – ‘we promise to behave ourselves!’…
… Meanwhile, a further piece of cross-community bonding and enlightenment, in the form of some current insights to the world beyond the bucolic balloon that is so often Valley life, may be gleaned from a recent (Nov 24) pullout section in The Economist magazine. This particular section focused on Mexico – its economy, demography, health services, drugs and violence, migration, and government – a fascinating read for any serious high school student and adult. It was passed around among the regulars at the 3-Dot and now I humbly suggest that one (or several) of our educators at the local high school seeks out this very readable, interesting, and informative piece and make it available to all of the students at the school library. If I was making decisions there, such a non-partisan account would be mandatory reading for every one of them – but I’m not…
… ‘Little children should be seen and not heard’ - a phrase that seems to have long passed into oblivion… Not necessarily a good thing, some might say…
… And to offset my curmudgeonly thoughts, here is a more ‘joyful’ outlook from The Old Buzzard in another in his insightful series – ‘The Approach of the Apocalypse’… Buzzard reports, “Having frequently witnessed the white-bearded grin of A.V.A. Mighty Leader, Bruce Anderson, and heard his jolly laughter on many occasions, I am unable to get over the thought that the red-coated stranger who struggles to come down all of our Valley chimneys in the early hours of December 25th may not actually be Santa Claus. I just thought you should know and if indeed it turns out to be the local newspaper Supremo then that is as big a sign as any warning I have mentioned all year long that the Apocalypse is approaching!"...
Well now I think it’s time to take my leave… So, until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; please remember to keep your windows cracked if you have pets in your vehicle; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Humbly yours, Turkey Vulture…

# 336 - December 5th, 2012

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… December birthdays include distinguished Valley folks such as - Bill Holcomb, Wilma Brink, Pete Benville, and Rick Rajeski – ‘Many Happy Returns!’…

Public Service Announcements… Calendars and pens at the ready… #272 – The A.V. Unity Club’s Holiday Bazaar is this coming Saturday, Dec 8 from 10am-4pm in the Apple Hall at The Fairgrounds in Boonville. Mrs. S. Claus informs me that her husband will be stopping by to see the kids from 11am-1pm and that a great time shopping with neighbors and friends is guaranteed all day long. Admission is free... #273 - ‘Christmas at the Little Red Schoolhouse’ is a special event that is being put on by the A.V. Historical Society on Sunday, Dec 9 from 1-5pm at the A.V. Museum – which is that very same Little Red Schoolhouse. This festive occasion will feature carol singing, an Xmas tree and gift basket raffle, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, local wines, Christmas memories, and the Little Red Schoolhouse will be dressed in Christmas Cheer”!... #274 – From the event at the Museum, may I humbly suggest that perhaps you make the short drive along Hwy 128 to The Grange and enjoy The Community Holiday Dinner, also on Sunday, Dec 9, starting at 5pm… #275 – The monthly School board meeting has been postponed until Thursday, Dec 13 at 6pm for the closed session and then 7pm when it is open to the public – this would be the time to share your opinions if you want to make a difference… #276 – The A.V. Lions will be having their Xmas party at The Buckhorn on Tuesday, Dec 11 – invitation only… #277 – Even more exciting, and an event that is open to everyone, is the Christmas Bingo at the Senior Center at 7pm on Tuesday, Dec 11. This will be preceded by a dinner at 6pm…

Talking of which, as a bonus P.S.A. here is the menu for the next week at the Senior Center… For lunch, the Center asks for a $5 donation from Seniors and charges $7 for Non-Seniors. For the Tuesday night dinner it is $6 and $8 respectively… Tomorrow, Thursday, Dec 6th at 12.15pm, lunch will be Pizzas to suit everybody’s taste – Pepperoni or Vegetarian or Chicken Alfredo, served with Quinoa salad and Spinach – Strawberry salad, with Banana Split Cake for dessert. Then next Tuesday evening Dec11at 6pm Marti Titus and her crew will be serving Beef Stroganoff, Egg Noodles, Roasted vegetables, Arugula salad, Tabouleh, and Lemon-pineapple dessert. This is followed by the Bingo at 7pm…Hope to see you there…

Moving quickly on to a few of the topics and Valley events under discussion this week at The Three-Dot Lounge – yes it’s “Moans, Groans, Good Thoughts, and Rampant Rumors” from my favorite gathering place in the Valley where people gather and share their thoughts about Valley life…
… Many 3-Dot regulars were at the four-day Redwood Classic “Best Little Basketball tournament in the World’ held last week at the high school gym in Boonville…I was there for a couple of afternoons and evenings and watched A.V. compete as hard as they could against two talented opponents who each won quite convincingly in the end… However, the A.V. boys’ intensity, effort, and determination were there for all to see and it was almost matched by my own effort to support Renée and Kevin Lee’s bbq concession that served up some delicious hot dogs and burgers, not to mention Goober’s pulled pork sandwiches on Friday evening…
… Along with a couple of other regulars, I attended the I.C.W.’s (Independent Career Women) Christmas party held at Roederer Winery last Saturday evening. Organized by Anne Fashauer, Gwen Smith, Vydell Wetzel, and Terry Ryder among others, the food and conversation were of the highest quality – as is always the case when the women are in the vast majority at an event in this Valley (which is a ‘Power Place’ for women as I’ve said many times). This opinion has nothing to do with the fact that I drank Roederer sparkling wine for four hours – not something you get to do at many events I would suggest!...

… From our 3-Dot regular, The Old Buzzard, comes another in his insightful series – ‘The Approach of the Apocalypse’… Buzzard reports, “So now we have police peering through windows watching people singing, dancing and drinking the night away before the officers decide to arrest them for indulging in such fun. This was the case last week when the Boonville Saloon decided to host an after-hours party for five. It was past 2am and the bar was closed to the public; the drinks were not charged for; the music not loud. It was just a couple of staff members and three friends having a nice time together, affecting nobody else - but apparently that is not allowed. Along with so many other restrictive laws and regulations that affect the enjoyment of our every day lives these days, this unnecessary and overly officious ‘police action’ in downtown Boonville would seem to me to be just another sign that the Apocalypse is fast approaching. Oh, and by the way, the rumor that the bar’s liquor license had expired, something that could be checked at any time, apparently turned out not to be true…

Well now I think it’s time to take my leave. So, until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Humbly yours, Turkey Vulture…

p.p.s. Keep on wagging that tail, Fred…
p.p.p.s. Silver Swan – please be nice to Skylark!
