# 434 - November 26th, 2014

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… And a “Happy Thanksgiving Day” to all! What a great day – “well done!” to whoever thought of it...Family, friends, food, drink, and football –it doesn’t get much better than that!
Meanwhile, I have a special treat for readers this week - an ‘enlightening’ trip down Memory Lane to celebrate 10 years of ‘A Bird’s Eye View’ - yes, it all began on November 24, 2004 and that original column is reproduced below…
But first here are a couple of Public Service Announcements (P.S.A.’s) for this week… Calendars and pens at the ready… #413 - The Vets from the Mendocino Animal Hospital have now confirmed with me that they are able to make a visit on Thursday, December 11… #414 - The Mendocino Bookmobile next visits the Valley on Tuesday, November 18. They are here on alternate Tuesdays for 45 minutes at each of these places and times: Navarro Store 9am (for 30 minutes); the Floodgate 12.30pm; Philo 1.30pm; Boonville (Apple Hall) 2.30pm. Phone 463-4694 for further details…
As a bonus P.S.A. here is the menu for the Community lunches over the next week at the Senior Center at the Veterans’ Building in Boonville… The Center asks for a $6 donation from seniors and charges $7 for Non-seniors… Tomorrow, Thursday, November 27, the Center will be closed for Thanksgiving but then next Tuesday, December 2, the menu for the 12.15pm lunch will feature Meatloaf, Mashed Potatoes w/ Gravy, Carrots, Rolls, Tabbouleh Salad with Birthday Cup Cakes for dessert... Remember, all ages are welcome!... Hope to see you there…

And now to a blast from the past - the very first Turkey Vulture column, published on Wednesday, November 24th, 2004… Thanks to one and all for your support over the years…
Valley dwellers and those beyond… As I travel in and around the beautiful Anderson Valley I am able to observe all sorts of weird and wonderful goings-on from my bird's eye view… Many sightings are strange yet true and my interpretations of them may well appear cruel but hopefully fair and just… You be the judge…
Let me begin by saying that it's a turkey's life and this week, of all
weeks, you are welcome to such a life!  With my feathered friends going at $7.95 for a sixteen-pounder their lives seem even more worthless than I had ever thought. I for one will not be devouring one of them this year but not, however, because my predatory instincts are wavering. No, an important dignitary from England, The Duke of Erdington, will be in town visiting friends for the Thanksgiving holiday and at his request, instead of turkey, a succulent lamb has been slaughtered and along with other assorted 'turkeys' from the Valley, we shall be enjoying the delights of an organic, free-range, alfalfa fed, apple munching lambs leg… I can almost hear it 'baaahing'…
Just this past week I was witness to a delightful Monday evening at the local hostelry, The Buckhorn Saloon. As always the beers were excellent and this was not just the opinion of those who produce them - The A.V. Brewery Crew, who were there in force, but also those of many others who were in attendance. There was much eating, drinking and merry-making as Monday Night Football played on the televisions, and, to complement the ales, the bar provided free snacks including some delicious bacon and cheese on potato skins and plates of spicy nachos. A fine time was had by all, added to by a smiling face behind the bar - always a pleasant bonus…Well done to Diana and the Gang, thanks for a fun evening…
During another recent trip along the Valley floor, I stopped by The Farm Supply to pick up some animal supplies and keep my appointment for my aging and injured dog with Dr Katy Summers from the Mendocino Animal Hospital. She, or one of her fellow vets, is at this venue almost every Tuesday afternoon (2pm - 3.30pm; call to confirm) and a marvelous job they do too!  It is a vital service to many people in the Valley and the care, knowledge, and genuine concern of Katy and the other vets are second to none. Their cause is aided and abetted by the animal-loving Nancy and Dave Gowan who do a splendid job of their own in owning and operating the Farm Supply and should be thanked for providing this venue for the vets to perform their magic...
As I made my way to the coast along Highway 128 on a rainy day a couple of weeks ago, I and many others found ourselves hindered in the desire to drive at a safe but efficient 45 mph by a 'stranger in a strange land' (a tourist) who insisted on a 25 mph speed. He was in a nifty little sports car and being right behind him I could make out his middle-aged appearance chattering away to a much younger woman at his side in the passenger seat. The road was slick and overtaking somewhat perilous yet as we passed numerous turnouts he refused to pull over and I watched as he continued to regale his 'friend' with no doubt fascinating tales. Finally, with seven cars behind me I had to make a move and on a stretch of road where visibility into the distance was clear I made my move. As I went by I gave him my old 'vulture' stare and a look of incredulity. Predictably, not wishing to be 'questioned' in front of the friend, the man 'bravely' flipped me off…        What is it with these folks who, whilst they are entitled to drive at any speed they wish, seem to think that everyone else has to… and then if their annoying behavior is pointed out to them they react in this way? Self-obsessed bastards is all I can come up with - S.O.B.'s for short - and our highways are full of them. As I often say, to those few who listen, the road is a place where one is often thrown into some sort of confrontational interaction with people one would never normally have anything to deal with in one's daily routine. Road rage is the ultimate reaction to these situations but fortunately most of us simply grimace and knowingly say to ourselves, "S.O.B !"… or something to that effect…
The other day, a good friend and I were ruminating about ruminants  (i.e. thinking deeply about sheep) as we relaxed on a hilltop above Yorkville surveying the Valley below. He clearly had a topic of some concern on his mind and as we each popped open a can of Guinness he turned to me and said," TV (his short for Turkey Vulture), have you ever wondered why they call them sheep herders or shepherds when they actually work with flocks of sheep not herds?"…. Before I could come up with some sort of witty reply he added, " I guess 'sheep flockers' was never going to stick"…. He is a wise man...
Not for the first time, the highlight of my fun-filled week was once again the visit to the Dump on Mountain View Road. Loaded up with a truck load of recycling - mainly wine bottles and pet food cans, I arrived at my destination to be met by the smiling face of the new, possibly permanent, County employee. He was very helpful and had come up with the elementary, yet brilliant, idea of putting out orange cones to guide the reversing vehicles to the open bins. We shall all miss the previous Dump Man and his 'trash talk' but if this new guy, Ron, who has filled in there on Jay's days off in the past, gets the job, I for one will be very pleased…
Election hangover…Just a few days ago as I was relaxing in my nest high above the Valley, I thought to myself that I was still somewhat astonished by the actual election results. However, as I studied various magazines I was not at all surprised to hear certain viewpoints from those entrusted with the upcoming four years of leadership in this country. Now I do not wish to get too political in my musings, and I rarely will, but some things just have to be commented on. For instance, the new senator for Oklahoma has called for not just the outlawing of abortion but for the death penalty for doctors who break such a law… Another new senator, from South Carolina, has said single mothers and homosexuals should not teach in schools… And a third new senator, from South Dakota, is a creationist and no doubt looks forward to the day when such theories appear in schoolbooks… Whatever your beliefs, surely these extreme convictions are no way to mend a wounded and divided country and one can only hope that the inevitable attempts to introduce such radical conservative social policies into law are unsuccessful… but what do I know? - I'm just a simple Turkey in the country with Valley 'stuff' to prey upon…
       Let us prey…

I’m outta here… Hope you enjoyed the trip down Memory Lane - some things never change do they?… Anyway, until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; be wary of strangers with more dogs than teeth; please remember to keep your windows cracked if you have pets in your vehicle; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Sometimes poking, often stroking, but always humbly yours, Turkey Vulture

p.p.s. Skylark – read any good books lately?... Keep on humming, Hummingbird… Everything cool with you, O.J.? Of course it is…

# 433 - November 19th, 2014

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… It’s been a busy week of watching high school sports and celebrating victories and apart from that my forays in and around the Valley have been limited… So let’s get straight in to the Public Service Announcements (P.S.A.’s)…
Calendars and pens at the ready… #413 - Unfortunately there are no planned visits to the Valley by the Vets from the Mendocino Animal Hospital for November but they have now confirmed with me that they are able to make a visit on Thursday, December 11… #414 - The Boonville Winter Market has started its winter schedule that sees it moving across the street from the summer location in the hotel parking lot to in front of the Boonville General Store in downtown Boonville, every Saturday from 10am -12:30pm. You are invited to ‘come on down with your locally grown or made food or crafts, to sell or trade.’ Or just go as a customer and buy something from the wonderful range of goodies. For more info, call Cindy at 895-2949… #415 - This Saturday, November 22 sees the return of The Real Sarahs to Lauren’s Restaurant in Boonville. They will be joined by Spec MaQuayde and Friends with banjos, storytelling, and apparently some ‘mischief’…#416 - Heads-ups for future heads-ups! Yes, here’s an early reminder, with Christmas gifts in mind perhaps, of the Valley’s two annual Crab Feeds that will take place early in the new year. First it’s the ‘Feed’ that benefits the Senior Center, held on Saturday, January 17, and then three weeks later, on Saturday, February 7, it will be Gloria Ross and her Crew presenting their event on behalf of the Catholic Church. More details on prices and where to buy tickets to follow soon but both events will sell out so don’t miss out!...
As a bonus P.S.A. here is the menu for the Community lunches and dinners over the next week at the Senior Center in the Veterans’ Building in Boonville… The Center asks for a $6 donation from seniors for both lunches and dinners and charges $7 for Non-seniors for lunches and $8 for the dinners… Tomorrow, Thursday, November 20, the lunch, always served by Marti Titus and her crew at 12.15pm, will be Beef Stew, Rolls, Broccoli Salad, Quinoa Salad, and Bread Pudding for dessert … Then, next Tuesday, November 25, at 6pm, the dinner menu will feature Turkey, Roasted Vegetables, Potatoes, Gravy, Cranberry Gelatin, Rolls, Barley Salad, with Pumpkin Bars for dessert... The Center will be closed on Thursday, November 27 for Thanksgiving… Remember, all ages are welcome!... Hope to see you there…

Moving quickly on to a few of the topics and Valley events under discussion this week at The Three-Dot Lounge – yes it’s “Moans, Groans, Good Thoughts, and Rampant (and surprisingly reliable) Rumors” from my favorite gathering place in the Valley, a location that sees people get together and share their thoughts about life in A.V. and where we subscribe to the Winston Churchill philosophy that “A lie will get halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put on its pants”… So I’ll put my pants on and continue…
… A number of 3-Dot regulars are keen supporters of our local high school sport’s teams and recently celebrated the football team’s successful 10-0 season that culminated in Coach Kuny’s guys’ deserved victory in the Redwood Bowl against Mendocino… Then this past weekend the boys’ soccer team won their postseason Championship for the third season in a row and the fourth time in five years… Meanwhile, last Saturday evening, following the soccer final, the girls’ volleyball team beat Pt Arena to advance to the semi-final that will be played at the local gym this evening (Wednesday). If successful, the girls will host the final on Saturday, November 22 and if they can win in that title game it will be the first time in school history that the three fall sports - football, boys soccer, and volleyball, have won their championships in the same year - what a remarkable achievement by the student athletes at our small high school… Go Panthers!...
… Inevitably we have a huge screen television here at The Three-Dot Lounge, not just for the sports but for all sorts of other quality programming that is available to the discerning viewer. Perhaps some of those people in the Valley who never miss a chance to inform anyone listening that they don’t have a television, will also one day realize this. Yes, folks, as I have pointed out before, if one looks beyond regular network television there is much that is informative, mentally stimulating, and entertaining to the intelligent adult. As Carl Sagan, creator and presenter of the wonderful series ‘Cosmos’ once said - “Used properly, television can educate and inspire awe as well as any book, painting, or film.” I think he might have been thinking of superbly written and acted dramas such as ‘The Sopranos’, Six Feet Under’, ‘The Wire’, ‘Mad Men’, and ‘Breaking Bad’, and cutting edge comedy shows such as ‘The Daily Show’, ‘The Colbert Report’, ‘Veep’ and ‘Inside Amy Shuler’… I advise you to tune in sometime…
… From our 3-Dot regular, The Old Buzzard, comes another in his insightful series – ‘Signs that the Apocalypse is Approaching’… Buzzard reports, “I recently read in this newspaper about the plague of flies in the Valley at this time of year, and its connection to the significant decline in the number of frogs – the flies’ natural enemy – quite likely as a result of the spraying done by the wineries. A winery advocate said, ‘you can’t grow grapes without sulfur, so what if a few frogs go, too?’ Charming, eh? (I should say that this was not a person connected to the Valley’s Golden Buttocks Winery that has incurred my wrath in the past)… I would respond to such nonsense by mentioning that a couple of months ago I was reliably informed that at one of the winery’s ponds there had been sightings of six-legged frogs! Six-legged frogs! This once again prompts the question, ‘What the hell is been sprayed around here?’... Anyway, after a few more moans and groans about this topic, and agreeing that the Apocalypse is a little closer thanks to such practices, Turkey Vulture and I opened a bottle of Pinot and moved on with our fascinating discussions”...

Oh, dear, has The Buzzard upset somebody? I’ll get him his coat and ask him to leave shall I?... That’s ok, I do believe he has to see a man about a sheep anyway… So, until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; be wary of strangers with more dogs than teeth; please remember to keep your windows cracked if you have pets in your vehicle; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Sometimes poking, often stroking, but always humbly yours, Turkey Vulture - and thinking you should now that we Turkey Vultures are monogamous and mate for life and sometimes, to prove our loyalty, we like to indulge in an ‘erotic’ display dance on our nesting grounds…
p.s. You can contact me with words of support/abuse either through the Letters Page or by e-mail at <turkeyvulture1@earthlink.net>
p.p.s. On the sheep, Grace… Hi, George – hope you and Sheila are well… Hi, Silver Swan – behaving yourself? Hopefully not!

# 432 - November 12th, 2014

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… I was very pleased and honored to be able to attend the Veterans’ Day of Remembrance last Sunday morning at the Evergreen Cemetery just outside Boonville. There were around sixty people from a broad range of Valley backgrounds and groups in attendance to pay their respects to those who have given so much so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. Featuring communal singing, songs by Patty Liddy, poignant readings by Tom Towey and Margaret Pickens, and a two-minute silence, along with other appropriate administrations and the laying of memorial red poppies on the Wall of Remembrance, it was a special service that hopefully those in attendance appreciated…
This will be a significantly shortened column this week for reasons that are far too scandalous to mention in a family newspaper… Here we go…

Public Service Announcements (P.S.A.’s)… Calendars and pens at the ready… #412 - It’s that time of year - to get your flu shot! They do work so try not to fall for the myths that they don’t and go along on to the Anderson Valley Senior Center in Boonville on Tuesday, November 18 from 11:00 to 1:00. This is well worth it and is hosted by Rite Aid pharmacy. Call 895-3609 for more details … #413 - Unfortunately there are no planned visits to the Valley by the Vets from the Mendocino Animal Hospital for November but they have now confirmed with me that they are able to make a visit on Thursday, December 11… #414 - The Boonville Winter Market has started its winter schedule that sees it moving across the street from the summer location in the hotel parking lot to in front of the Boonville General Store in downtown Boonville, from 10am -12:30pm. You are invited to ‘come on down with your locally grown or made food or crafts, to sell or trade.’ Or just go as a customer and buy some goodies. For more info, call Cindy at 895-2949… #415 - The Mendocino Bookmobile next visits the Valley on Tuesday, November 18. They are here on alternate Tuesdays for 45 minutes at each of these places and times: Navarro Store 9am (for 30 minutes); the Floodgate 12.30pm; Philo 1.30pm; Boonville (Apple Hall) 2.30pm. Phone 463-4694 for further details… #416 - Gardeners, Farmers and Produce Growers of all kinds, please remember Food Bank days (3rd Tuesday of every month) as a place to donate your extra produce.  It will be greatly appreciated.  Please drop off on the Monday before, behind Boonville Methodist Church. If you need someone to glean your produce to take to the Food Bank, contact Valerie Kim at valerie.h.kim@gmail.com or Denisse Mattei, the Food Bank director, at 895-3763…
As a bonus P.S.A. here is the menu for the Community lunches over the next week at the Senior Center in the Veterans’ Building in Boonville… The Center asks for a $6 donation from seniors and charges $7 for Non-seniors… Tomorrow, Thursday, November 13, the lunch, always served by Marti Titus and her crew at 12.15pm, will be Steak Pizzola, Pasta, Peas, Faro Salad, and Garlic Bread, with Pecan bars for dessert … Then next Tuesday, November 18, the menu will feature Pineapple Pepper Chicken, Brown Rice, Carrots, Wheat Berry Salad, and Apple Cake for dessert... Remember, all ages are welcome!... Hope to see you there…

Well now I think it’s time to take my leave as I have to see a man about a sheep… So, until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; be wary of strangers with more dogs than teeth; please remember to keep your windows cracked if you have pets in your vehicle; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Sometimes poking, often stroking, but always humbly yours, Turkey Vulture - hoping you enjoyed the read, and who knows, you might miss me when you’re gone (?)

p.p.s. Keep on wagging that tail, Fred… Is that ‘lafter’ I hear, Carroll?... Keep up the good work, Round-eyed Robin

# 431 - November 5th, 2014

Greetings one and all – if you are sitting comfortably then I shall begin… This next week sees a special event take place in the Valley to commemorate Veterans Day (officially Tuesday Nov. 11). It’s the annual Veterans Day of Remembrance service at Evergreen Cemetery on A.V. Way just north of Boonville. This important gathering of Valley folks, to which everyone is welcome and is encouraged to attend, will take place on Sunday, November 9 at 10.30am. It should be stressed that this occasion is neither a political nor religious event. It offers a chance for us to show support and gratitude for both those who gave their lives or were wounded in wars of the past, and for those who have served or continue to serve so that we may have the freedoms and liberties that we continue to enjoy today. In terms of taking a deep breath and thinking about what really matters, in my humble opinion, this is one of the more important community gatherings of the year. Despite it’s significance it will take less than an hour so please think seriously about attending... Hopefully I’ll see you there... N.B. A little inclement weather will not postpone this ceremony; after all, those we are remembering went through far worse I’m sure, but in the event of significant rain, the event will move to the Veterans Hall / Senior Center in Boonville. Different place, same time – 10.30am…

With this in mind, for your Quote of the Week, I’d like to share with you ‘The Remembrance’ - a few poignant words from the very moving poem ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon, written during the First World War - sadly and unknowingly titled ‘the war to end all wars’…
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
              We will remember them.”

Public Service Announcements (P.S.A.’s)… Calendars and pens at the ready… … #919 - Unfortunately there are no planned visits to the Valley by the Vets from the Mendocino Animal Hospital for November - hopefully they will be back in December… #920 - The Boonville Winter Market begins this coming Saturday November 8, in front of the Boonville General Store in downtown Boonville, from 10am -12:30pm. You are invited to ‘come on down with your locally grown or made food or crafts, to sell or trade.’ Or just go as a customer and buy some goodies. For more info, call Cindy at 895-2949… #921 - The Anderson Valley Grange is having its regular second Sunday Local Organic Pancake and Egg Breakfast on November 9, from 8:30-11am. Breakfast ranges from $5-10 for kids through hungry folks sizes, with Mendocino Grain Project wheat and local bacon and eggs. Gluten free available (phew - that’s a relief!)...
As a bonus P.S.A. here is the menu for the Community lunches and dinners over the next week at the Senior Center in the Veterans’ Building in Boonville… The Center asks for a $6 donation from seniors for both lunches and dinners and charges $7 for Non-seniors for lunches and $8 for the dinners… Tomorrow, Thursday, November 6, the lunch, always served by Marti Titus and her crew at 12.15pm, will be Sesame Chicken, Noodles, Spinach, Asian Slaw, Tabbouleh Salad, and Coconut-Lime Berry Cake for dessert… Then, next Tuesday evening, November 11 at 6pm, the dinner will feature Pork Roast, Twice Baked Potatoes, Butternut Squash, Bulgur Salad, and Strawberry Gelatin, with Pumpkin Gooey Cake for dessert. As this is the 2nd Tuesday of the month, the dinner will be followed by Bingo at 7pm. Hopefully you will be able to attend, and remember – ALL ages are welcome!

… First up – did you vote? If not, then any complaining about the government is not really valid…
… The ElderHome has plans afoot for two new occupants from our senior community before the end of the year - and for that the rest of the community is presumably very pleased…
... How was your Halloween? Well, while many of you were no doubt enjoying the Dark Carnival’s ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ event at The Grange, some folks were saving Valley civilization, such as it is… Yes, many brave citizens were caught up in the annual ‘Battle on the Streets of Boonville’ between The Zombies and The Angry Villagers, thankfully won once again by the Villagers who included several 3-Dot regulars. With their burning torches and sharpened pitchforks, the ‘good guys’ saved the town from those walking corpses who would no doubt have made things very difficult around here had they been victorious – certainly with their plans to ban all speed limits, bring in a Starbucks and a Taco Bell, invite outsiders to plant even more ‘ego’-vines, open a medical marijuana dispensary in the school cafeteria, and shockingly install former Brewery Supremo ‘King’ Ken Allen as Mayor of Anderson Valley… It was a narrow escape thanks to those citizens who stood and fought against the odds - and in the magnificent words of a certain Mr. W. Churchill, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed, by so many, to so few”...
… Along with a couple of regulars, Hummingbird and myself recently attended an event at which the tacos served up were made by Gordo Torales - wow! In my humble opinion, these were the best flavor of ‘real’ Mexico in the Valley that I have tasted in some time. Now before anyone hops on their burro and rebukes me for putting Gordo’s tacos above the Mexican culinary delights at Libby’s, I am only saying that they were more ‘Mexican’ than Libby’s, which does marvelous food obviously but which in my opinion is actually more CalMex than the ‘real thing.’ Trust El Gallinazo on this – or just ask any Mexican friend you may have who has eaten courtesy of Gordo...
… Several regulars at The Three-Dot plan to attend the Guy Fawkes celebration and bonfire at Carsey Castle at the corner of Hwys 128 and 253 tonight, November 5, at dusk. Hope to see you there, but first I suggest you read below…
… From our 3-Dot regular, The Old Buzzard, comes another in his insightful series – ‘Signs that the Apocalypse is Approaching’… Buzzard reports, “Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot hatched by provincial Catholics, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords in London. Celebrating the fact that the protestant King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure… What disturbs me is the lack of such an attempt on the Senate and/or House of Representatives’ buildings in this country - surely this apathy on the part of the citizenry and their apparent acceptance of the miserable efforts to govern by folks ‘working’ at those locations is a sign that the Apocalypse is Approaching!?!...”
Oh, dear, has Buzzard upset somebody? – I’ll ask him to get his coat and leave, shall I? That’s fine - I know he has to see a man about a sheep anyway… So, until we talk again – ‘Keep the Faith’; be careful out there; stay out of the ditches; think good thoughts; be wary of strangers with more dogs than teeth; please remember to keep your windows cracked if you have pets in your vehicle; and may your god go with you… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Sometimes poking, often stroking, but always humbly yours, Turkey Vulture - pleased in the knowledge that the old hare has returned safely to his burrow
p.s. You can contact me with words of support/abuse either through the Letters Page or by e-mail at <turkeyvulture1@earthlink.net>
p.p.s. On the sheep, Grace… Hi, Silver Swan – behaving yourself? Hopefully not!... Bobwhite Quail - keep on knitting!...
